A PHYSICAL AI INTERFACE FOR ADAPTIVE LEARNING ASSISTANCE IN CHILDREN
WHAT?
Lumi is a physical AI interface designed to support children under the age of 12 during learning activities. Through tangible interaction, voice assistance and visual guidance, Lumi provides adaptive help without relying on traditional electronic devices or assistance from another person.

WHY?
WITHOUT LUMI
WITH LUMI

Easily loses concentration when searching for help
Depends on a phone, tablet, or computer to ask questions
It limits their learning when electronic devices are introduced at an early age
Has difficulty connecting explanations to the correct part of the worksheet
Everyone receives the same type of explanation regardless of their learning needs
Often needs adult assistance to continue learning
May become frustrated when concepts are difficult
Stays focused while receiving AI assistance
Receives support through a dedicated physical interface
Encourages learning without increasing dependence on electronic devices
Identifies the relevant part of the worksheet through the LightGuide Surface
Adapts explanations to the child's learning needs through different interaction modes
Promotes more independent learning with contextual AI guidance
Improves understanding through personalized, step-by-step explanations
HOW?
PROFESSOR'S HAT
The Professor Hat transforms digital settings into a tangible interaction. Instead of navigating menus or pressing buttons, it is simply placed a different tassel on Lumi to select the desired explanation style. Each hat contains an RFID tag that is automatically recognized by the device, while the integrated camera remains discreetly hidden inside the hat, allowing Lumi to understand the learning context without affecting the simplicity of the interaction.
WHY AN ADAPTIVE AI?
Children under the age of 12 learn in very different ways. Their level of understanding, pace of learning, school curriculum, and preferred learning style vary significantly from one child to another. Rather than providing the same explanation to every user, Lumi allows parents to select the response mode that best matches their child's needs. Whether a child benefits from SIMPLE, EDUCATIONAL, CREATIVE, or more TECHNICAL explanations, the adaptive interaction ensures that AI support is delivered in the most effective and engaging way for their individual learning process.

LIGHTGUIDE SURFACE
The LightGuide Surface is an illuminated A4 platform placed beneath the worksheet that provides precise visual guidance. After identifying the relevant part of an exercise, Lumi highlights the corresponding area from underneath the paper, allowing children to immediately understand where the explanation applies. This creates a faster, more intuitive learning experience while avoiding interruptions caused by searching through the worksheet.

REUSE OF CUBERT

To accelerate development and build upon a proven platform, Lumi reuses Cubert, an AI colleague system originally developed for Design Thinking sessions. We preserved its core hardware architecture, including the ESP32, Raspberry Pi, RFID technology, facial expression system, and audio components. Building on this foundation, we introduced new interaction concepts such as the Professor Hat, the LightGuide Surface, an integrated camera, and adaptive learning modes, transforming Cubert into a physical AI interface specifically designed to support children's learning through tangible interaction.
